Microneedling

Microneedling is a simple yet powerful way to refresh your skin, refine texture, and boost collagen – without surgery or downtime. Whether you’re dealing with acne scars, pigmentation, or early signs of ageing, this treatment stimulates your skin’s natural repair process for a smoother, clearer, and more radiant complexion. Here at Harley Street Dermal, we focus on using microneedling, done properly, to enhance your skin using your body’s own natural repair processes.

What is Microneedling and how does it work?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that uses extremely small needles to create tiny micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body’s healing process which boosts collagen and elastin production as a result of the body’s natural repair process. This leads to smoother, firmer, and more even-toned skin, helping improve the long-term quality of your skin. The treatment is well-established and multiple studies have shown that micro-needling significantly improves skin structure and quality over time, especially when combined with other treatments such as exosomes or PRP/PRF.

For optimal results, we recommend a course of 3-6 treatments, spaced 4 weeks apart, depending on your skin’s needs. To maintain and build on your results, a top-up session every 3–6 months is advised. This keeps the skin in a state of active repair and regeneration which maintains the results from the initial treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if microneedling is right for me?

Microneedling is suitable for most skin types and concerns, especially if you’re struggling with acne scarring, pigmentation, enlarged pores, early signs of ageing, or overall dullness. If you prefer a regenerative, minimally-invasive approach with minimal downtime and proven results, then microneedling is an excellent choice to consider. Our doctors will always conduct a full consultation to ensure that you are suitable for treatment and can explore potential alternative solutions if you aren’t.

Will the results look natural?

Yes. Microneedling enhances your skin’s own regenerative ability, meaning the improvements develop gradually and naturally over time. You won’t look “done” or artificially altered, just refreshed, smoother, and more luminous. Because it works with your body’s biology, the result is healthier, stronger skin, not an over-corrected appearance.

Is the treatment painful?

Most patients find microneedling very tolerable. A topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure to ensure comfort. You may feel a light scratching or vibration but discomfort is usually minimal and brief.

What should I expect on the day?

Your doctor would usually welcome you and start with a detailed consultation. This would include discussing any previous treatments you’ve had, what your understanding of the treatment is and exploring your goals and expectations. They will also discuss the nature of the microneedling procedure and related risks. If you are agreeable, the doctor will then usually conduct the treatment by first taking a pre-treatment photo and then applying topical anaesthetic while you complete the necessary medical and consent forms. After the treatment is complete, the doctor will then explain any relevant aftercare and offer you information on how to contact them for questions or any follow-up you might require. Our doctors are always contactable directly for any clinical queries by email. You may also be offered supplementary treatments, such as medical-grade skincare creams which could further enhance the effects of the treatment.

What should I expect afterwards?

Redness and sensitivity are common for 24–48 hours. Some clients may experience light flaking, dryness, or tightness in the days that follow as the skin regenerates. By day 3–5, most people see noticeable glow and smoother skin texture. You can resume normal skincare within a few days, and full collagen stimulation continues for up to 6 weeks post-treatment.

Are there any precautions I should take beforehand or afterwards?

Before treatment, avoid active skincare ingredients (like retinoids or acids), tanning, and waxing for 5–7 days. Afterwards, avoid hot environments (steam rooms, saunas, strenuous workouts), exfoliation, and direct sun exposure for 48–72 hours. SPF must be worn daily to protect your new skin. A gentle, hydrating routine will be advised to maximise your results and prevent irritation.

Is there any follow-up after the procedure?

Microneedling often requires successive treatments for the best results. If you’re undergoing a course of treatments, we’ll monitor your progress at each visit and adjust your plan as needed. You’re welcome to check in with us virtually or in clinic to discuss your skin’s response or if there are any concerns.
