Smile Lines (Nasolabial Folds) Filler

Smile lines (known as Nasolabial Folds) can form around the mouth between the sides of the nose to either side of the mouth. Dermal fillers are the ideal way to soften these lines so that they only show when you smile, not all the time. The aim is to restore a more rested, youthful appearance in a way that looks natural but impactful. Here at Harley Street Dermal, we’ve treated thousands of people to keep their smile lines showing that they are happy, not that they are ageing.

What are the Smile Lines and how do we treat them?

Smile Lines refer to the lines that form when you smile. They often extend from the side of the nose to the side of the mouth. They occur because of muscle movements caused by smiling. However, volume loss combined with increased laxity of the skin from the mid-face that occurs with age can cause these lines to become visible even at rest. This can contribute towards the appearance of ageing or looking tired. Smile Lines usually respond well to dermal fillers which can soften the lines in a way that doesn’t affect your smile.

Dermal filler is effectively a gel made of cross-linked hyaluronic acid (which is contained naturally within the skin itself) which gives it the ability to provide structural enhancements, such as lifting out the smile lines. Because hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the skin, the filler usually integrates really well into the skin and can lead to enhancements that look natural but impactful.

It’s important that the treatment is applied conservatively to ensure that just the right amount is used to prevent over-filling. This is why the treatment should be conducted by an experienced injector who knows exactly what they are doing and can tailor the treatment to your specific needs and goals.

Our Smile Line Treatment Results

Why consider having Smile Line Filler?

  • Smile Lines are often one of the earliest signs of ageing. This makes it a priority target for treatment with dermal fillers if you want to restore lost volume and to give the face a natural-looking lift
  • The results look completely natural and most people won’t look like they had treatment by the time the treatment settles
  • The treatment usually takes around 20 minutes so it’s easy to fit in between other commitments
  • There is usually minimal downtime and you can usually resume your normal routine immediately after treatment.
  • Treatment of smile lines with dermal fillers eliminates the need to subject yourself to the pain, costs and risks of invasive surgery. It’s significantly cheaper and much, much less risky
  • Results usually last around 12 months, sometimes longer
  • There’s no long-term commitment- in the event that you feel the treatment is not for you, the treatment can be completely reversed with dissolving or left to break down slowly over time. This is unlike surgery where the results are irreversible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if Smile Line Treatment is right for me?

The answer to this is quite simple- if you have deep smile lines and are looking to give your face a subtle lift or refresh at an affordable price, with minimal downtime and without the hassle or expense of surgery, then smile line treatment using dermal fillers could be the right solution for you. Our doctors will always conduct a full consultation to ensure that you are suitable for treatment and can explore potential alternative solutions if you aren’t.

Will the results look natural?

Absolutely. Our team of highly experienced doctors are amongst the most respected and sought after practitioners for dermal fillers in London with over 20,000 treatments performed successfully over the last 10 years. Our focus is on enhancing your appearance in a way that doesn’t draw the wrong type of attention to yourself but rather subtly enhances what you already have or restores what you might have lost in volume over the years.

Is Smile Line treatment painful?

A topical anaesthetic will be applied to help numb the treatment area beforehand. Our doctors use a combination of injection techniques which are often only mildly uncomfortable and most people tolerate the procedure without any issue and minimal pain.

What should I expect on the day?

Your doctor would usually welcome you and start with a detailed consultation. This would include discussing any previous treatments you’ve had, what your understanding of the treatment is and exploring your goals and expectations. They will also discuss the nature of the injecting procedure and related risks. If you are agreeable, the doctor will then usually conduct the treatment by first taking a pre-treatment photo and then applying topical anaesthetic while you complete the necessary medical and consent forms. After the treatment is complete, the treatment area is massaged and cleaned and then a post-treatment photo is usually taken for comparison purposes. The doctor will then explain any relevant aftercare and offer you information on how to contact them for questions or any follow-up you might require. Our doctors are always contactable directly for any clinical queries by email.

What should I expect afterwards?

There will usually be some redness and swelling in the injected areas. Usually this is mild/minimal and often doesn’t last for more than a few days at most.

Are there any precautions I should take beforehand or afterwards?

We usually advise that you refrain from drinking any alcohol for 48 hours before your treatment as this could increase your chances of bruising. Other than that, there’s not much you need to do in preparation for the treatment. We do not advise stopping any medication before your treatment. After the treatment, you’re advised to avoid topical creams/cosmetics for at least 4 hours afterwards and to avoid alcohol and exercise for a couple of days.

Is there any follow-up after the procedure?

We don’t routinely follow up everyone after their treatment. However, in certain cases some people will need more treatment and they would usually be encouraged to come for a top-up or ‘second stage’ treatment (which comes with a charge). However, if you ever feel the need to be reviewed after your treatment for whatever reason then our doctors are always happy to offer this free of charge.

Can I see examples of your work?

Absolutely, have a look below at some of the treatments we’ve done over the years. You can also see more examples of our work and videos explaining treatments on our Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok pages.
